"...Ron, Glad to hear you are a nature man too!
"I've been an outdoor person all my life and I see environmental abuse up close--like clear cutting of beautiful forest land and I deplore such things and could suggest better ways to obtain the wood the country needs."
Clear cutting? It's more economical than selective harvesting. It would take some form of "government regulation" which would send the timber industry into a fit. And that would be bad from a land use rights standpoint. Point is, we are all Americans, and profit as a motive does not always compliment the national interest. That 200 acre tract of land that was beautifully forested prior to clear cutting is far more than a visual blight. It costs the general public, such as the cost attributed to siltation of our public reservoirs and the shipping lanes in our rivers and harbors. Same goes with strip mining. In the long run, these are costs that are absorbed not by the coal producer or the timber man, but by us, the taxpayers.
Some may call me a socialist, but they are just blowing a smoke screen over the fact that there are public costs to the taxpayers by coal mining, drilling, and any other type of resource extraction by industry. It is necessary to generate our power, provide fuel for our transit, and material for our homes. Business, industry and the public must share this burden and how are we going to accomplish that in a way that we can sustain for our grandchildren?davidwwaltershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12893117005617955196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-388559448711486521.post-39104361725874842452009-10-30T00:51:09.869-04:002009-10-30T00:51:09.869-04:00I am headed out to hunt and gather or rather kill ...I am headed out to hunt and gather or rather kill and grill.

Deer this weekend. Certain types of crickets when fried in possum fat can be quite tasty. I'm a greenie, just not one of the extreme kind in that I love a clean environment and the great outdoors, but not at the expense of my family's well being. And I'm certainly not foolish enough to think that man is causing global warming---this is a special interest lie with its ultimate goal of wealth distribution. I've been an outdoor person all my life and I see environmental abuse up close--like clear cutting of beautiful forest land and I deplore such things and could suggest better ways to obtain the wood the country needs. I hate to see land gutted in W VA--strip mining is not a pretty site. The scars on the land will take years to heal. Unfortunately an industrial society needs power and the life styles and indeed the economic welfare depends on a plentiful supply of energy. Clean energy is perferred, but until such time as that is avaiable we must use what we have. I favor more off-shore drilling as it is clean and for the most part safe. I would also like to see the construction of many new nuclear power plants. However, there are those in this country who would condemn and destroy the traditional power sources and rush headlong into the unknown in the name of saving the planet from what I belief is a false assumption of Man-made Global Warming. AS clean environment is desired by all and the issue is how do we get there with the least pain to our economic well being.Ron Russellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11220328678840317631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-388559448711486521.post-50257633046111568502009-10-29T22:15:20.532-04:002009-10-29T22:15:20.532-04:00I'm with TexasFred.
