The below story in about West Hollywood banning cat and dogs sales. Personally I could care less where a person gets his dog--at a pet store or from an animal shelter. That's his choice and not mine. This post is about the right of personal choice, a right that is vanishing because many on the left want to make those choices for you. Yes, they know what's best and they are out to make sure that you followed the guidelines laid down by them and walk in their footsteps. These people are the liberal progressives whose values, whose ideas and whose dreams must be imposed by law on all those who will not accept them for what they are---the road to some great Utopia where everyone acts and thinks alike all for the good of the collective. In their "Brave New World" individualism is evil and unacceptable and must be replaced by collectivism.
These elite "know it alls", will continue to force their thoughts, their ideas and their values down our throats as long as we sit idly by and do nothing. Until that time when we stand together and say, "don't tell me what to do"!

The vote to ban the sale of dogs and cats in this famously liberal enclave will likely have more bark than bite, since no pet stores in the city currently sell animals.
But officials hope that Tuesday's unanimous city council vote will be seen beyond West Hollywood as a symbolic stand against puppy mills and kitten factories.
"You have to start somewhere," said Michael Haibach, deputy to Councilman Jeffrey Prang, who sponsored the legislation. "The more people who jump on the bandwagon the better."
This famously quirky city has a reputation as a trailblazer in animal welfare rights.
It became the first city in the country to prohibit cat declawing in 2003, a measure that has since spread to dozens of other cities, including Los Angeles. Another West Hollywood ordinance officially terms pets as "companion animals" and gives their "guardians" a local tax deduction for pet adoption fees.
Since the pet sales ordinance was introduced earlier this month, the city has received dozens of inquiries from other municipalities across the country interested in replicating it, Haibach said. Some information requests came from Europe, he said.
Pet shops would only be permitted to offer animals from shelters for sale once West Hollywood's ordinance goes into effect in September. South Lake Tahoe adopted a similar ban last year.
Advocates for the pet industry said such ordinances are misguided because they do not tackle the source of the problem — irresponsible commercial breeders who keep animals in deplorable conditions.
"It's not going after the substandard breeders," said Michael Maddox, vice president of governmental affairs for the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council in Washington, D.C. "A pet store doesn't get you very far. We support people's right to get their pet from the best source that suits them."
At West Hollywood's D.O.G. Pet Boutique, co-owner Christian Velasco said he is against selling puppy-mill dogs that are sold to stores for $20 to $30 then resold to the public for hundreds of dollars.
"We could make a lot of money doing that, but we don't think it's right," Velasco said.
Instead, the store refers customers to shelters and allows a rescue agency to bring its animals to the store for adoption. Story from FOX News.
One last word, I know some would say if you live in West Hollywood and want a dog from a pet store, just go into Los Angles and buy one. That's great for the time being you can do that, but if these radicals are allowed to have their way they would extend this coast to coast and in a few short years all the dogs at the animal shelters would begin to look the same. Strangely that's exactly what they have in mind for us--think alike, act alike and eventually look alike---mindless robots following a few chosen elites!!!
I respectfully disagree with the thrust of your post. Local people should have local control, even if they make dumb choices -- even because they make dumb choices.
ReplyDeleteThe principle here should be "subsidiarity", which, speaking very roughly, means that the larger the scope of government, the less control it has; and that control comes from the bottom up, rather than from the top down.
Support the right of these people have their enclave of crazy -- and fight like hell to prevent them from imposing it on the rest of us.

Jake
It's California Ron... They are *different* out there, they DO tell folks what to do...
ReplyDeleteIt's when they try to impose their will on me, here in Texas that gets me ready to fight...
What they do in California is their problem, and if the whole damned place fell into the Pacific, we'd ALL be better off, especially if Pelosi, Boxer and Feinstein were all home when it happened..
You do make an interesting point about local control. City councils and such local governmental groups should not be able to tell small businesses what they can and cannot do, what they can and cannot sell as long as the service they provide or the item they sale does not interfer with the general welfare of the community---many of these local groups have over-reached to the point on intrusion on our personal liberties and rights.
ReplyDeleteI do understand where you are coming from on this local control issue and I certain believe in that, but not at the expense of common sense and personal liberties. Big brother in the city council is judge as dangerous as big brother in the Oval Office.
You got that right Fred, CA is going under without slipping off into the Pacific--their debt is sinking them. CA is about to experence a revolution and a regime change unless big brother in Washington steps in and bails them out. Those progressive fools out there have driven the richest state in the union right into the ground---I would say its very fitting!
ReplyDeleteThis is sheer lunacy from the state that was once well off but is now one of the biggest sponsors
ReplyDeleteof a socilist agenda at the state, county and local levels. I am all for local gov't on a logical level that does not penalize small businesses like this one would do.
Oh, I forgot, silly me. The asshat Obama and his porkulus plan has created two million jobs and "many of those were in the private sector." I am sure that will help out all those small business owners in Weirdywood, Falicornia.
This is what happnes when libtards, commie socilaists and so called progressives stay in power too long.
Seems like it should be up to the store owners, if they want to sell pets, fine. If not, then people should not be telling them how to run their business.
ReplyDeleteJust my opinion.

The Peoples' Republic of California strikes again. The progressives have always believed they know what is best for us dumb liberty loving individuals.
ReplyDeleteWhoa they sell Cats and Dogs in CA! I thought they were liberals out there and cat & dog slavery was over and no ownership was allowed. Even heard they want to marry their dogs and cats.
ReplyDelete:)
In reality, it's all just empty statements and posturing, lefties love making empty, worthless statements that make them feel all warm and fuzzy.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree that it would be more sensible to let the people buy their puppies, liberty isn't liberty if you only let people do what you think is more sensible. Let the town block certain types of businesses (or someone will say that you can't block pornography stores in your town -- freedom of speech). Let the town block the sale of puppies (or someone will say that you can't block the sale of heroin in your town -- it's the user's body). And so on.
ReplyDeleteThe point isn't that these people shouldn't prevent the sale of pets. We agree there. The point is that people in a town should be able to make rules for itself.
