Hispanic Boycott

Victoria, Texas (pop. 55,000) is a town about 80 miles soutwest of Houston.

Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this past weekend as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, noting that revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down by 19%.

Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97%, and the cost of daily clean-up and trash collection was down by 84%.

Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers actually paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards.

Glad to find another Political Inquirer fan. Although this is an interesting story, people should be very careful about scapegoating hispanic immigrants for current economic problems. Even if they contribute to crime, like larceny, they have also done much to fuel the American economy, and are often the first to be hit when the economy suffers; unemployment among hispanics is 15%, roughly twice what it is among white Americans.

Think, perhaps that you missed the point of the post. This was an imported article, but I agree with the content. When the hispanics decided to target only caucasion businesses in Victoria, they crossed the line, but many of them are used to doing that---so I expect that from them. I lived in Mexico for many years in a small town north of Mexico City, Jacala. Have many, many good friends there and take their friendships seriously. That aside, many Hispanics living in this country are here illegally and I choose to call them illegal aliens. But when Hispanics choose to boycott white only businesses they leave themselves open to comments such as those expressed in the post. Thanks for the visit to my blog and I will return to yours often.

This article is bogus. None of this really happened. Several problems pop up immediately.
1. I have never seen any reputable newspaper end an article with an exclamation mark.
2. I checked this story with the Victoria Advocate and they have never heard of any such boycott.
3. If a boycott were to take place, MORE money would be being sent out of the country, not less.
4. Trash on the streets???
5. Shoplifting???
Honestly, how gullible can people be? I live very near Victoria and travel there weekly and I never heard one thing about any boycott, certainly not as recently as August '09. I am really saddened that some ignorant racist faked an article that no doubt, many narrow minded readers will accept as Gospel. :-(

TO PWWsotx ~ I am so sick of weak minded people always wanting to make this a race issue !! Why is it so hard for the left to grasp the meaning of the word "illegal"? Why can't they look at the facts in a responsible way and realize that REAL AMERICANS are tired of dealing with people who have NO RESPECT for the laws here in America who have come here ILLEGALLY? I don't see any of you protesting Mexico's immigration law .. why not? We do not care what race the person is and never have, which you would know if you would educate yourselves and read the history of our country. We have been soft for way too long and now we protest and try to enforce laws and you can only come up with a lame "racist" comment? Go home and read the history of our country and stop and remember all the men and women who have lost their lives to preserve our FREEDOM. Anyone can come here, all we ask is that they do it LEGALLY like millions of others have done. And after you protest the laws in Mexico, China, Russia, Cuba and other countries, then feel free to come back here and protest (if you live through any of those protests) but at least protest for the right reasons and get off the "lame bus racist" argument. Time to graduate from elementary school thinking and put on your big boy britches and remember respect is earned... so far you don't deserve any. Think outside the box of your little world and listen to what the majority of hard working Americans are saying ~ they pay the bills in the country !!
