THERE'S GOLD IN THEM THERE HILLS!

Recently geologists from the United States determined there are vast mineral deposits in Afghanistan, estimated to be valued at $1 Trillion Dollars.  The deposits include iron, copper, gold, lithium and other valuable metals.  Yes, the impoverished country of Afghanistan could very well become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium" and other minerals. At first this sounds great, but upon reflection I think not so fast!  Sooner or later we will leave that nation and I have little doubt that forces unfriendly to us will fill the vacuum and those new sources of revenue will in the end be used against us.  We found the goodies, but the "GOLD IN THEM THERE HILLS" will at some future date buy the bombs used to kill Americans.

A team of U.S. geologists and Pentagon officials has discovered vast mineral wealth in Afghanistan, conceivably enough to turn the scarred and impoverished country into one of the world's most lucrative mining centers, a senior military official told Fox News on Monday.

"There is stunning potential here," Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, told the New York Times in a report published Monday. "There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."

Americans discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, including iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium, according to the report. The Times quoted a Pentagon memo as saying Afghanistan could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium," a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and cell phones.

During a visit last month to Washington, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said his nation's untapped mineral deposits could be even higher -- perhaps as much as $3 trillion.

The mineral resources are a "massive opportunity," Karzai said at a May 13 event with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton held at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

The report in the Times said the U.S. Geological Survey began aerial surveys of Afghanistan's mineral resources in 2006, using data that had been collected by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Promising results led to a more sophisticated study the next year.

Then last year, a Pentagon task force that had created business development programs in Iraq arrived in Afghanistan and closely analyzed the geologists' findings. U.S. mining experts were brought in to validate the survey's conclusions, and top U.S. and Afghan officials were briefed.

So far, the biggest mineral deposits discovered are of iron and copper, but finds include large deposits of niobium, a soft metal used in producing superconducting steel, as well as rare earth elements and large gold deposits in Pashtun areas of southern Afghanistan, the report said.

In an op-ed published last month in a London newspaper, former Afghan finance minister Ashraf Ghani, wrote: "Afghanistan is rich in minerals including copper, iron, marble, chromite, manganese and emeralds. With good governance in place, these assets can generate funds."  Source of story FOX News

One of the commentators fretted over those resources falling into the hands of the Taliban. It's not likely though. Those guys still live in the stone age. But, Russia or China? That's a different story.

Why did the Russians leave Afghanistan? Were they truly defeated, or did they decide to leave, regroup, wait for some other smuck to free the country from the Taliban and then waltz back in for the spoils?

I say we kick some serious Taliban butt and then split it with a real Afghanistan... Certainly not with Hamid Karzai... It would never replace the human sacrifice of our troops, but it would help pay for the war...

And the sad thing is, the United States is full of natural resources, but the enviro-wackos have ensured we can't use our own.

I said elsewhere yesterday that it'll either be the Chinese or the Russians or some other power profiting from this unless America decides to take what they've rightfully earned. I hope America doesn't take the high road like they did in iraq and now it's the Chinese profiting from your hard work.

But one way or another, the money from this will be used by them to wage jihad on us in the west, not the chinese or anyone else. Just like the saudis, these muslim savages don't need to know how to drill or mine, westerners will drill and mine and give them the money.

I just think we might as well be the ones doing the mining.

I expect that the Afghanis will be really thrilled to have their current life of abject poverty growing heroin enhanced to one of subsistance mining for foreign firms.

I hope they can keep it safe. That could go a long way in financing the Taliban.
